The restaurant is predominantly black, lit only by strategically placed spotlights that give it a dramatic, theatrical feel. Call it modern Japanese.
With its diverse and refined menu, Inagiku remains one of Singapore’s top Japanese restaurants, but the pleasure of dining here comes at a price. The mainstays of sashimi, sushi, teppanyaki, tempura and shabu shabu would be perfect if not for their rather small portions. Thankfully the signature teppanyaki king prawn departs from the norm by offering a larger crustacean; it comes with a special rich sauce said to be made from a secret recipe incorporating 12 ingredients. The Wagyu shiyaki highlights richly marbled beef cooked over hot rocks – flavourful but, again, skimpy. Overall, Inagiku offers excellent quality but not necessarily excellent value; be prepared to order a variety of dishes to make a complete meal or you’ll leave hungry.
An impressively extensive and varied wine list includes much more than the usual Japanese sake and shochu found in Japanese restaurants. Both Old World and New World wines are available, with a wide range of labels, varieties and regions.
Excellent service contributes to the fine dining experience here. The wait staff are courteous, gracious, attentive and highly knowledgeable about the menu.
Dinner for two costs around $400.
